Smartphone instrument with two calculation methods (Young–Laplace, polynomial); validated on 2,049 synthetic drops and benchmarked against KRÜSS DSA100E for static and dynamic angles.

Conditions

Liquid: distilled water.

Substrates: glass, PMMA, PS, Teflon AF, superhydrophobic (span hydrophilic → superhydrophobic range).

Protocol: 50 µL drop; injection/suction 3 µL/s; three measurements per surface; simultaneous imaging of the same drop from perpendicular axes (smartphone + KRÜSS).  

Outcome

Repeatability: synthetic-drop repeats were identical (three per drop).

Accuracy: avg error 0.01% across 2,049 synthetic drops (10°–162°).

Agreement: smartphone ≈ KRÜSS on static and advancing/receding angles across 5 surfaces.

KRÜSS DSA100E (drop-shape method; 1200×800 imaging)

On-phone pendant-drop ADSA (capture + analysis + display). Accuracy 0.001% on 750 synthetic drops; near-identical agreement with KRÜSS across liquids; method independent of phone model.

Conditions

Liquids: dodecane, ethylene glycol, distilled water (24 °C).

Needle: 1.83 mm flat tip; injection: 0.1 mL/min. 


Replicates: 3 pendant drops per liquid; simultaneous imaging (smartphone ⟂ KRÜSS).

Phones: LG-G4 & Nexus-5.   

Outcome

Repeatability & accuracy: ideal profiles avg error 0.001 ± 0.006% (max 0.141%) over 750 cases; robust to 0.5° tilt and ±5–50 µm edge shifts. 


Agreement: smartphone ≈ KRÜSS across all three liquids; ~353 ms / 705 ms analysis times (LG-G4 / Nexus-5).
