FOR RESEARCHERS · WETTING & SURFACE TENSION

Methods Section Generator

Generate a journal ready methods paragraph for contact angle, surface free energy or pendant drop measurements, with the primary method citations attached. It uses only the parameters you enter and never invents a value.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Dropometer to use this tool?

No. Select "Other instrument" and enter its name and manufacturer. The paragraph generates the same way, without the two Dropometer validation citations, which apply only when you select Dropometer.

Can I use a liquid that isn't in the list?

Yes. Check any liquid row and edit its name and surface tension values directly. The generator uses whatever is in those fields, not the label, so you can repurpose a row for a liquid not shown by default.

Does the generated paragraph guarantee reviewers won't ask questions?

No. It's a defensible starting draft built only from the parameters you provide. The reporting-completeness checklist flags details reviewers commonly expect, but you should still check the final paragraph against your own protocol before submitting.

What does a generated paragraph look like?

Example inputs: static contact angle, Dropometer, Young-Laplace fitting, water, five replicates, 3 µL drops on plasma treated PET film at 23 °C and 45% relative humidity, read 10 s after deposition. The output reads: "Static contact angles were measured by the sessile drop method using a Dropometer smartphone based goniometer (Droplet Lab, Brampton, Canada) [1]. Sessile drops of 3 µL water (distilled) were deposited on plasma treated PET film at 23 °C and 45% relative humidity. Contact angles were recorded 10 s after deposition and determined by Young-Laplace fitting with automatic contact point detection [1]. Five independent measurements were performed per liquid, and results are reported as mean ± standard deviation." Reference [1] is Chen, Muros-Cobos and Amirfazli, Review of Scientific Instruments, 2018.

Which citations are added when I select the Dropometer?

Selecting Dropometer adds the peer reviewed validation paper that matches your measurement: contact angle measurement with a smartphone (Review of Scientific Instruments, 2018) for contact angle and surface energy, or surface tension measurement with a smartphone using a pendant drop (Colloids and Surfaces A, 2017) for pendant drop. Model citations, such as Owens and Wendt for OWRK, are added for any instrument.
