Contact angle goniometer buyer's guide

Best Contact Angle Goniometer for ISO/GLP-Regulated, Fully Automated High-Throughput QC

In regulated QC the instrument is judged on what it can document and how many samples it runs without an operator. This is the one use case where our own instrument ranks last, and this guide shows why.

Scored 1 to 5 on 11 weighted criteria. Prices and specifications checked 23 October 2026.

The short answer

A premium benchtop goniometer (KRÜSS DSA100, Biolin Theta Flex or DataPhysics OCA) is our pick for ISO/GLP regulated, high throughput QC. They are quote only, offer software controlled dosing and motorised axes, and state 0.1° accuracy. Confirm the 21 CFR Part 11 option in writing before you buy. The Brighton Surface Analyst is the runner up for water contact angle at volume: its automated model runs over 1,800 inspections an hour into an MES.

We make the Dropometer and it ranks third here because it does not support audit trails or electronic signatures. Every weight and score is below.

The ranking

Three options for QC at volume: premium benchtop systems, an industrial handheld with an automated sibling, and a portable kit.

Pick by situation

  • If your SOP names several methods and the file needs audit trails: Premium benchtop. Automated dosing and validated PC software; confirm Part 11 in writing.
  • If you inspect water contact angle on parts at volume: Brighton Surface Analyst. Over 1,800 inspections an hour on the automated model, with an MES feed.
  • If you need a validated number for method development, not the regulated record: Dropometer. US$4,990 with 0.35° published accuracy; keep records in your own system.
  • If you need to prove the method before buying: Gage R&R study. Run a repeatability and reproducibility study on your own parts.

Also checked and not ranked: Ossila and DIY rigs, which list no automated dosing or audit trail, and dyne pens, which leave no record. The ramé-hart range is scored inside the premium benchtop group.

KRÜSS DSA100 premium benchtop drop shape analyzer with motorised stage and high speed camera

Top pick

Premium benchtop (KRÜSS DSA100, Biolin Theta Flex, DataPhysics OCA)

KRÜSS, Biolin Scientific, DataPhysics: Quote only (refurbished KRÜSS DSA100S listed at €23,864 excluding VAT), checked 25 October 2026

4.3/ 5

Premium benchtops rank first because they combine automation, every common method and PC software that regulated labs already validate. Their score depends on the records criterion: confirm the Part 11 option with the vendor, because we could not find it stated on the public pages we read.

Where it wins

  • Software controlled dosing for up to 8 liquids and motorised axes
  • 0.1° stated accuracy
  • Every common contact angle and surface energy method
  • Biolin lists a user manager with privacy levels

Where it loses ground

  • Quote only; budget for IQ/OQ, training and service
  • 21 CFR Part 11 or audit trail options not stated on the public pages we read
  • Fixed benchtop install
  • Warranty terms not published
Brighton Science Surface Analyst 5001 handheld contact angle instrument

Runner up

Brighton Science Surface Analyst (5001 and automated)

Brighton Science: Quote only (no published price), checked 23 October 2026

3.6/ 5

Brighton leads on throughput: the handheld reads in about 2 seconds and the automated model runs over 1,800 inspections an hour into an MES. It scores low on scope and published accuracy because it measures water contact angle only and states no accuracy figure. See our Dropometer vs Surface Analyst comparison.

Where it wins

  • Over 1,800 inspections an hour on the Automated Surface Analyst
  • RS232 or Ethernet API to an MES; QR code sample IDs
  • Automatic drop deposition
  • Brighton reports helping develop ASTM D8597

Where it loses ground

  • Water contact angle only; no surface tension or multi liquid surface energy
  • No published accuracy figure
  • Quote only, plus water cartridges
  • No Part 11 statement on the pages we read

Third

Dropometer

Droplet Lab: US$4,990 (list price, base kit), checked 23 October 2026

3.3/ 5

The Dropometer contact angle and surface tension kit gives a validated number at the lowest cost here, but it is not built for a regulated record. The product page states that audit trails and electronic signatures are not supported, so it scores 1.5 on the most heavily weighted criterion.

Where it wins

  • 0.35° accuracy against a KRÜSS DSA100E in peer review
  • Static and dynamic angle, surface tension and surface energy
  • US$4,990; lifetime licence; 5 year warranty
  • Zeus passed its own Gage R&R on the Dropometer and has reordered twice since

Where it loses ground

  • No audit trail or electronic signatures
  • Phone app software, not validated PC software
  • Under a minute per drop; no sample changer
  • API only on request

How we arrived at these scores

Each option is scored from 1 to 5 on the same 11 criteria used across our contact angle guides. A 3 meets what a regulated QC lab needs; a 5 exceeds it. The weights are set for regulated, high throughput work and add to 100 percent, with records carrying the most. Multiply each score by its weight, add the rows and divide by 100: that is the headline score. The premium benchtop column scores KRÜSS DSA100, Biolin Theta Flex and DataPhysics OCA as a group.

When not to buy a Dropometer

Expert perspective

Place a drop and just read it and you get an apparent angle, a value somewhere between advancing and receding that isn't much use. Zisman settled that in the fifties.

Frequently asked questions

What does a contact angle goniometer need for GLP or 21 CFR Part 11?

Unique user logins, an audit trail of every change, electronic signatures where your process requires them, and software you can qualify. Ask each vendor for its Part 11 statement in writing; we could not find one on the public pages we read.

Does the Dropometer support 21 CFR Part 11?

No. The product page states that audit trails and electronic signatures are not supported. Use it for method development or non regulated checks, and keep regulated records elsewhere.

How do I show a contact angle method is repeatable before buying?

Run a Gage R&R study on your own parts with your own operators. Zeus did this on the Dropometer before moving production QC to it; see the Zeus case study.

Which standards apply to contact angle in regulated QC?

It depends on the material. ISO 19403-2 covers surface free energy from contact angle for paints and varnishes, and ASTM D8597 covers portable goniometers. See our ISO 19403-2 and ASTM D8597 summaries.

Why does a single static reading fail an audit?

A drop placed and read once gives an apparent angle between advancing and receding. Specify the method, drop volume and timing in the SOP. Our 10 steps to reproducible contact angle lists what to fix.

Is high throughput the same as automation?

No. A handheld can read in seconds but needs an operator at each part. Automation means software controlled dosing, positioning or a sample changer, so throughput does not depend on staff.
