Contact angle goniometer buyer's guide

Portable vs Benchtop Contact Angle Goniometers: An Honest Comparison

Choose a benchtop goniometer if you need temperature control, high speed video or automated runs; choose portable when the sample cannot come to the lab. For portable work beyond water contact angle, our pick is the Dropometer at US$4,990. Runner up for large parts measured in place: a handheld analyzer such as the KRÜSS Mobile Surface Analyzer.

What is the real difference between portable and benchtop goniometers?

The useful difference is not size. It is whether the sample travels to the instrument or the instrument travels to the sample, and how many measurements you need once it gets there.

  • Benchtop goniometers sit in a lab on mains power. The sample goes on a stage under a side view camera. They offer the widest method lists, temperature chambers, high speed cameras and automated dosing.
  • Portable stage instruments, such as the Dropometer portable contact angle and surface tension kit, keep the stage and side view camera but run on battery and pack into a case. The sample still has to fit the stage or a fixture.
  • Handheld analyzers, such as the KRÜSS Mobile Surface Analyzer, DataPhysics PCA 200 and Brighton Science Surface Analyst, sit on the part itself. They measure car bodies, wings and walls in place, usually with fewer methods.

Portability alone does not separate these makers. KRÜSS, DataPhysics and Brighton Science all sell instruments you can carry. What separates them is the method list, the published accuracy and where the drop has to sit.

When does a benchtop goniometer win?

Buy a benchtop system when the measurement needs control that a portable instrument does not carry. Each point below has a published example.

  • Temperature control. KRÜSS lists temperature chambers for the DSA25 from −30 °C up to 400 °C, depending on the chamber. Biolin Scientific lists a high pressure chamber for the Theta Flex, up to 400 bar and 200 °C.
  • High speed video. Drop impact and fast spreading need thousands of frames per second. KRÜSS lists up to 2,300 fps as standard on the DSA25; DataPhysics lists up to 4,276 fps on the OCA 25.
  • Automation. Multi liquid dosing (up to 8 liquids on the DSA100S) and motorised stages run surface free energy series and sample maps without an operator placing each drop.
  • Tighter published accuracy. KRÜSS and Biolin Scientific publish 0.1° for their benchtop systems. The Dropometer's published figure is 0.35°.
  • Audit trails. Regulated labs that need electronic records and user roles should check benchtop software first; the Dropometer does not support audit trails.

When does a portable goniometer win?

Portable instruments win when moving the sample costs more than moving the instrument.

  • The sample cannot travel. Large or installed parts, such as car bodies, aircraft panels and walls, are what handheld analyzers are built for. KRÜSS describes the MSA as working in any orientation on samples of any size.
  • The surface changes after treatment. Plasma and corona treated surfaces lose their treatment over time, so a reading taken next to the line can differ from one taken hours later in a lab.
  • Several lines or sites. One instrument per line removes the queue at a shared bench. Zeus moved from one shared benchtop goniometer to five Dropometers at one plant; the Zeus case study covers how, and Zeus's own Gage R&R on the Dropometer passed.
  • Offline or secure sites. The Dropometer processes every measurement on the device, with no internet needed except to export. See offline and secure site measurement.
  • Odd shapes on a fixture. A European glass research institute measures the outside of whole containers, up to 34 cm tall, on a custom Dropometer rig.

Handheld analyzer or portable goniometer?

This is the choice most portable buyers actually face, and the two answer different questions.

  • A handheld analyzer places a drop on the part and reads it in seconds. Brighton Science quotes a result in under 2 seconds for the Surface Analyst. Method lists are shorter: mostly static contact angle and, on some models, surface free energy.
  • A portable stage instrument needs a coupon or a fixture, and each drop takes longer to place. In return it measures advancing and receding angles, sliding angle and pendant drop surface tension as well as static angle.

ASTM D8597 covers contact angle measured with portable goniometers that place and read the drop themselves. If a customer specification cites it, check that your instrument works the way the standard describes before you buy.

Do portable and benchtop readings agree?

On smooth, non absorbing surfaces, yes; on porous or rough ones, not reliably. The one independent comparison we found shows both cases.

Berti and colleagues (iScience, 2025) compared a KRÜSS benchtop analyzer with a KRÜSS Mobile Surface Analyzer. On a polymer reference plate the readings were 81.79 ± 4.17° and 80.92 ± 3.78°, a 0.87° gap that was not significant. On porous stone with biofilm the portable read about 31° to 32° higher, and the two sets could not be converted into each other.

The Dropometer's 0.35° accuracy comes from side by side measurements against a KRÜSS DSA100E, published in Review of Scientific Instruments (2018) and Colloids and Surfaces A (2017). Whatever you buy, measure a few of your own samples on both instruments before you switch methods.

Expert Quote

Not all contact-angle measurements are created equal: the right method depends on the application. A sessile drop and a tilted plate can give very different, and equally correct, numbers.

Which should you buy?

  • Research lab with one bench and a temperature study: a benchtop system with a chamber. See the advanced research guide.
  • Research or teaching lab that shares an instrument between rooms: a portable stage instrument covers contact angle, surface tension and surface energy in one case. See the teaching and academic lab guide.
  • Production QC on flat samples or coupons: one portable instrument per line. See the industrial QA guide.
  • QC on large assembled parts: a handheld analyzer that sits on the part. See the field and on site testing guide.
  • Regulated or high throughput QC: an automated benchtop system. See the ISO and GLP guide.

Who should not buy a Dropometer?

Being portable does not make the Dropometer the right portable instrument for every job. Choose something else if any of these apply.

  • You must measure large parts where they sit without cutting a coupon or building a fixture. A handheld analyzer that sits on the part fits better.
  • You need a pass or fail water angle in seconds on a moving line. A handheld built for speed fits better; each Dropometer drop takes longer to place and read.
  • Your method sets temperature or humidity. Environmental control is an upgrade for the Dropometer, while benchtop systems list chambers from below freezing to several hundred degrees.
  • You need high speed video of impact or spreading at thousands of frames per second.
  • You need the tightest published accuracy. Several benchtop systems publish 0.1°; the Dropometer publishes 0.35°.
  • You need audit trails or electronic signatures. The Dropometer does not support them.

Where can you go deeper?

About this guide. Droplet Lab makes the Dropometer. Specifications and prices are as each maker or a named seller published them on 25 October 2026; where a maker publishes nothing, we say so instead of estimating. If tight published accuracy and temperature control matter most, a benchtop system wins; if you must measure large parts where they sit, a handheld analyzer wins. This guide was drafted with Claude Opus 5.5 and reviewed by Droplet Lab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a portable contact angle goniometer as accurate as a benchtop one?

It depends on the instrument and the surface. Several benchtop systems publish 0.1° accuracy; the KRÜSS Mobile Surface Analyzer publishes 0.8° and the Dropometer 0.35°. An independent 2025 study found portable and benchtop readings agreed on a smooth polymer plate but not on porous stone.

Can a portable goniometer measure on large parts?

Handheld analyzers such as the KRÜSS Mobile Surface Analyzer, DataPhysics PCA 200 and Brighton Science Surface Analyst sit on the part and are built for large surfaces. A portable stage instrument like the Dropometer needs a coupon or a custom fixture.

Which portable instruments also measure surface tension?

The Dropometer measures surface and interfacial tension by pendant drop. KRÜSS lists surface tension by constrained sessile drop for its Mobile Surface Analyzer. Most handheld analyzers focus on contact angle and surface free energy.

Do portable goniometers offer temperature control?

Not as a rule. Temperature and humidity chambers are mainly benchtop options. For the Dropometer, environmental control is an upgrade rather than part of the base kit.

Do I need a computer with a portable goniometer?

It varies. The Dropometer runs on the phone included in the kit. KRÜSS says the Mobile Surface Analyzer is powered from a notebook, and the compact Ossila benchtop needs a Windows 11 PC.

What does ASTM D8597 cover?

ASTM D8597 covers contact angle measured with portable goniometers that place and read a sessile drop, on coatings, substrates and pigments. Check the current edition from ASTM before you rely on it for acceptance testing.
