Contact angle goniometer buyer's guide
Contact Angle Goniometer Cost, Pricing and TCO Guide
Published prices on 25 October 2026 run from US$3,000 for an entry research goniometer to €23,864 for a refurbished premium benchtop, and most premium makers quote only. For one lab measuring contact angle, surface tension and surface energy, our pick is the Dropometer at US$4,990 with no software fees. Runner up for static angle only: Ossila, US$3,000.
How much does a contact angle goniometer cost?
Published prices fall into four bands. Every figure below comes from the maker or a named seller, checked on 25 October 2026; the table that follows gives each source.
- Teaching units, about US$1,000 each. The Dropometer education kit lists at US$999 per unit, with lower per unit prices from three units.
- Entry research instruments, US$3,000 to US$5,000 new. Ossila lists its goniometer at US$3,000 excluding VAT. The Dropometer contact angle and surface tension kit is US$4,990 for the base kit.
- Mid range and portable analyzers. A refurbished KRÜSS Mobile Surface Analyzer lists at €7,587.10 excluding VAT. ramé-hart says its models start at about US$5,000.
- Premium benchtop systems, €12,000 and up. Refurbished KRÜSS DSA30S and DSA100S units list at €12,308.80 and €23,864 excluding VAT. ramé-hart's range reaches about US$25,000. DataPhysics, Biolin Scientific and new KRÜSS systems are sold by quote only.
One seller's guide, from Nanoscience Instruments (updated July 2025), puts entry systems at US$5,000 to US$15,000, mid range at US$15,000 to US$40,000 and high end at US$40,000 to over US$100,000. Treat it as a seller's view: every example in it is an instrument that seller offers.
The purchase price is only the first invoice. Software fees, service, consumables and staff time decide what you pay by year five.

What pushes a goniometer's price up?
Five things decide where an instrument lands on the price range. Check each one against what you will actually measure before you pay for it.
- Automation. Motorised dosing, a motorised tilt stage and an automatic sample table add cost, and pay back only at high test volumes or when operators change often.
- Methods included. Static contact angle alone is the cheapest. Advancing and receding angles, sliding angle, pendant drop surface tension and surface free energy are often separate software modules or hardware options.
- Optics and speed. High speed cameras and telecentric optics matter for fast spreading or tiny drops. For a static drop on a flat sample they add cost without changing the number.
- Software licensing. Some vendors price software per seat or per year. A one time licence and a yearly fee look the same on the first invoice and very different by year five.
- Environment control. Temperature and humidity chambers are usually extra cost options. Price them only if your method or standard needs a controlled environment.
The contact angle measurement guide explains which methods each application needs, so you can strike options you will not use.
What does a goniometer cost over five years?

Use this table as a worksheet. The middle column is what Droplet Lab publishes; the right column is what to ask every other vendor so the totals compare.

Worked example, one research lab: Dropometer base kit US$4,990, no licence or service fees, plus one replacement syringe (US$93.60) and one needle pack (US$57.00) each year. Five years of those consumables add US$753, for a total of US$5,743 before test liquids, staff time, tax and shipping. Your own replacement rate may differ.

| Cost item | Dropometer (published) | Ask other vendors |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | US$4,990 base kit; options from US$700 | List price for the exact configuration you need |
| Software licence | Lifetime licence, unlimited users, no yearly fee | One time, per seat or yearly? What does year two cost? |
| Software updates | 5 years included | Included for how long, and at what cost after? |
| Warranty | 5 years on hardware; consumables excluded | How long, and what is excluded? |
| Service and calibration | No periodic service; calibration built into the software; bubble level on the stage | Example of published pricing: Brighton Science annual ship in service US$3,350 to US$5,500 a year; one time calibration US$1,550 to US$2,400 |
| Computer | Phone included in the kit | Ossila needs a Windows 11 PC; many benchtop systems ship with or need a PC |
| Syringe and needles | One Hamilton syringe and assorted needles included | Replacement prices; a Hamilton 500 µL gastight syringe lists at US$93.60 and a 6 pack of 22 gauge blunt needles at US$57.00 |
| Test liquids | Same for every instrument | Diiodomethane 100 g lists at US$156.00; HPLC grade water 4 L lists at US$231.50 |
| Staff time | Same formula for every instrument: tests per month × minutes per test × hourly rate | Time a demo on your own samples; do not rely on brochure times |
What does it cost to equip several sites or lines?
Fleet cost is where the instrument choice changes most. One shared benchtop instrument is one purchase, but every sample has to travel to it, and every result depends on whoever is on that bench that shift.
The arithmetic is simple. Five Dropometers, one per line, cost 5 × US$4,990 = US$24,950 at list price, before tax and shipping. A refurbished KRÜSS DSA100S listed at €23,864 excluding VAT on the KRÜSS shop (checked 25 October 2026) buys one bench in one room. New premium systems are sold by quote, so ask for the per unit price of every extra station before you compare.
Zeus, a polymer tubing maker, went from one shared benchtop goniometer to five Dropometers at its primary plant between October 2024 and February 2025. Zeus ran its own Gage R&R on the Dropometer in January 2025, and it passed. The Zeus case study covers how they rolled it out.
Three costs are easy to miss when you add sites:
- Method transfer. Every site needs the same drop volume, wait time and fitting method, or the numbers will not compare. Budget time at each site to write the procedure and check it against the first site.
- Cross site checks. Plan to measure one shared reference sample at every site each quarter, so drift shows up before a customer complaint does.
- Training. The Dropometer sets up in about 2 minutes, but each new operator still needs training on drop placement and the written method before their numbers count.

Which budget fits which buyer?
Start from what you measure and how often, then pick the price band. Each line links to the guide that scores the options for that buyer.
- Teaching lab buying several units: the Dropometer education kit at US$999 per unit fits a class set where a single benchtop would leave most students watching. See the teaching and academic lab guide.
- One research lab on a single grant: the Dropometer at US$4,990 covers contact angle, surface tension and surface energy with a peer reviewed method. Ossila at US$3,000 costs less if static contact angle is all you need. See the under US$5,000 guide.
- Production QC on several lines: price one instrument per line, not one shared bench, and compare the totals in the fleet section above. See the industrial QA guide.
- Field and on site work: battery power and a light kit matter more than a lower list price. See the field testing guide.
- Regulated or high throughput QC: audit trails, user roles and automated multi sample runs justify a premium benchtop budget. See the ISO and GLP guide.
- Advanced research: high speed imaging, picolitre dosing or temperature control point to a premium system. See the advanced research guide.
- A handful of tests a year: a contract lab or a DIY camera setup may cost less than any purchase. See the occasional testing guide.
Who should not buy a Dropometer?
A lower price only helps if the instrument does the job. Choose something else if any of these apply to you.
- You need audit trails or electronic signatures. The Dropometer does not support them, so it will not meet a 21 CFR Part 11 style data integrity requirement on its own.
- You run large batches unattended. There is no motorised multi sample table. Each sample is placed by hand.
- Your surfaces sit below 10° or above 175°. That is the edge of the published contact angle range, so fully wetting and extreme superhydrophobic samples are a poor fit.
- You need millisecond dynamics. Fast spreading, drop impact and dynamic surface tension at very short surface ages call for a high speed camera or a bubble pressure tensiometer.
- Your method sets temperature or humidity. Environmental control is an upgrade, not part of the base kit, so price it in or choose a system with a chamber.
- You only ever need static water contact angle and the lowest purchase price. Ossila costs US$1,990 less on the date checked.
Our contact angle goniometer buying guide hub lists the alternatives for each of these cases.
How do you get quotes you can compare?
Two quotes are only comparable when they price the same work. Send every vendor the same short list.
- Which methods are included in this price, and which are separate software modules?
- Is the software licence one time, per seat or yearly, and what does year two cost?
- What is the warranty period, and what does a service or calibration visit cost after it?
- Which consumables does the method need, and what do replacements cost?
- What is the published accuracy, against what reference, and where is it published?
- What are shipping, installation and training costs, and the lead time?
- What does each extra unit cost if you add a site or line later?
Put the answers into the five year table above. The cheapest quote and the cheapest five years are often different instruments.

About this guide. Droplet Lab makes the Dropometer. Other prices are as published by the maker or a named seller on the date shown; where a maker publishes no price, we say so instead of estimating. If the lowest purchase price is all that matters, Ossila wins; if you need audit trails or automated multi sample runs, a premium benchtop system wins. This guide was drafted with Claude Opus 5.5 and reviewed by Droplet Lab.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a contact angle goniometer cost?
On 25 October 2026, published prices ran from US$3,000 (Ossila, excluding VAT) and US$4,990 (Dropometer) for new entry research instruments to €23,864 excluding VAT for a refurbished KRÜSS DSA100S. Teaching units start at US$999. DataPhysics, Biolin Scientific and new KRÜSS systems are sold by quote only.
Is there a yearly software fee for the Dropometer?
No. The base kit includes a lifetime software licence for unlimited users and five years of software updates. An optional subscription exists only as a different way to pay, with no features behind it.
Is a cheaper goniometer accurate enough?
It depends on what you compare. Ask each maker for a published accuracy figure and the reference instrument behind it. The Dropometer's 0.35° accuracy comes from side by side measurements against a KRÜSS DSA100E in two peer reviewed papers; 0.01° is only its display resolution.
Do I need a service contract?
For the Dropometer, no periodic service is required: calibration is built into the software and the stage has a bubble level. For other instruments, ask what a service or calibration visit costs after the warranty ends and add it to your five year total.
Is a used or marketplace goniometer worth buying?
It can be, if you can check it. Refurbished units from the maker, such as the KRÜSS shop listings, come with a warranty. Used and marketplace listings vary widely; a used Attension Theta Lite was listed at US$1,000 on 25 October 2026, with no configuration stated. Ask for the software licence, calibration record and a test measurement before you pay.
How do I compare instruments sold by quote only?
Send every vendor the same list: methods included, licence terms, warranty, service cost after warranty, consumables, published accuracy and the price of each extra unit. Then fill in the five year table on this page for each quote.
